Burnley football club: Ditch single use plastic
Please stop using single use plastic for all football matches and other events at the stadium
Why is this important?
By 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in our seas. But Premier League football clubs still give out hundreds of thousands of single use plastic items every single matchday. Plastic cups, straws, stirrers, bags, they all end up clogging up our oceans and filling landfills.
Football supporters shouldn't be forced to contribute to plastic pollution, just because they want a drink or some food at a match.
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is an island of discarded plastic that is now triple the size of France.
Some organisms thrive off discarded plastic, forming a new type of ecosystem called a "plastisphere".
Scientists have found plastic bags at the bottom of the Mariana Trench 36,000 feet below sea level.
A glass bottle can take roughly one million years to degrade in the environment.
Every year 18 billlion pounds of plastic seeps into oceans from coasts.
