CQC to STOP doing announced visits!
I would like to see a change in the way CQC (Care Quality Commission) regulate Care Homes, I want them to STOP doing announced visits and only conduct Completely unannounced visits without any prior warning, wether it be a month, a week or even 24 hours notice. If these Care Homes have NOTHING to hide then having unannounced visits won’t be a issue. I have worked within the elderly care sector for over 15 years. I have witnessed numerous times Care Homes who have had announced visits pull out all the stops just for the inspection, I have witnessed them call staff in from annual leave, I have witness management tell everyone to be on their best behaviour, what to say when asked questions, I’ve even witnessed them telling staff to make sure that they spend time with residents, make sure they’re clean have clean nails etc, even down to the quality of food being served on that day, when usually it wouldn’t be that nutritious, but surely ALL of this should be happening anyway! The Care Quality Commission is an executive non-departmental public body of the Department of Health and Social Care of the United Kingdom. It was established in 2009 to regulate and inspect health and social care services in England.
Why is this important?
This is important because it would STOP Care Homes who cover things up getting away with it. It would mean that the vulnerable residents would get the quality of care that they rightly deserve. If a Care Home has nothing to hide and everything is done inline with policies and procedures and the Law then they wouldn’t object to unannounced visits from CQC. This would also lead to a more accurate CQC Rating which would give people a more informative choice of where they want to place their loved ones.
