During the restructuring of our legislation following the vote to leave the EU, please ensure that our environmental protection laws do not get watered down.
This includes the NERC Act, Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (as amended), CROW Act, as well as legislation to protect our green spaces particularly those of high ecological value (e.g. SSSIs, nature reserves, Ramsar sites) and laws ensuring that air pollution is kept to a minimum and our beaches/seas are not polluted.
Why is this important?
Whichever way you voted in the EU referendum, I hope you will agree that we live in a small country with a high population density and ever increasing pressure for development of our green areas, which both support our wildlife and give people space to exercise, relax and play. We have lost so much natural habitat already it would be a tragic if one of the results of this referendum is the erosion of our remaining wild places and their associated wildlife. Due to our high land use, it is also important that stringent regulations on pollution of air, water and land are kept in place. This will ensure that our small island remains 'a green and pleasant land'.

With the change in Secretary of State for the Environment, I will now be contacted Michael Gove with the results of this campaign. However, it would be good to get a few more signatures before I submit. The environment has not featured strongly in the Brexit/election debates, so let's use this as a forum to make our politicians remember how important environmental issues such as climate change are biodiversity are to us.
