Object to the A38 road development around Derby

The Secretary of State for Transport, has asked National Highways and "interested parties" to submit evidence around another development consent order for the A38 expansion.

We submitted representations in October 2021: https://www.a38derbychaos.org/news/representations-submitted and continue to argue that we are in a climate and ecological emergency and that wasting £250 million on widening a road that will fell thousands of trees, remove large amounts of precious wildlife habitat and increase traffic makes absolutely no sense and is unlawful. It’s also an insulting waste of public money during a cost of living crisis!

We have strong arguments to stop the A38 expansion but need to hire legal experts again to help us form and present these arguments. We need to raise £7,000.

We've been campaigning to stop the A38 road works in Derby because they completely ignore the climate emergency, will cause huge amounts of air pollution, four years of disruption to Derby City and cause ecological destruction all to accommodate more road vehicles.

Derby City Council still keeps supporting this scheme despite the declaration of a climate emergency. Road lobbyists, developers and short term economic interests are being prioritised over human health and climate action.

As carbon emissions took a sudden turn for the worst this week, as lockdowns across the globe were eased, a top climate scientist has warned that building more roads “would be very detrimental”. Corrine Le Quere, is a professor of climate change at the University of East Anglia and a member of the Committee on Climate Change which was established by the Government to provide independent advice on climate change.

Legal challenge to the Department of Transport could halt the A38 works!

Transport Action Network want to challenge Road Investment Strategy 2 (RIS2) which the A38 works are part of. RIS2 will spend £27.4 billion by 2025 on thousands of miles of roads from Cornwall to Northumberland - at a time of a global health crisis and climate and ecological emergency.

We urgently need to reduce emissions year-on-year if we are to keep the earth’s temperature within safe limits of 1.5C. By building more roads and creating more traffic, RIS2 would take us in the wrong direction and lock us into an unsustainable future.
RIS2 plans for a future of more roads and more cars, where traffic levels would nearly double by 2050. This would be devastating for people, green spaces and wildlife, making it harder to walk and cycle or to catch a bus.
