Permit parking only for Lockwood Street, Newcastle under Lyme

Dear Mr Eyers

I wish to present this petition for your attention regarding parking in Lockwood Street, Newcastle under Lyme.

I reside in the street with my 8 year old son who has cerebral palsy. Harrison is a full time wheelchair user and needs access to the pavement to allow him to use the only dropped curb available.

Cars often over park on the pavement and block off access for him. This leaves us stranded and unable to get to his wheelchair vehicle.

Most of the residents are aware of our situation and avoid causing any issues. The problem comes from people parking to access the businesses on the main road and Andrew Place.

The pavement is blocked all the way down the street and it’s also difficult to get around the corners in a vehicle due to cars double parked.

I have complained many times about this situation and I have applied for disabled parking with no success.

I would really appreciate your support with this issue and consider making Lockwood Street permit holders only, which will minimise the number of cars on the street.

Yours sincerely
Lydia Wakelin

Why is this important?

Vehicles parked on the footway can cause an obstruction and inhibit the independence of many vulnerable people, especially older or disabled people with visual or mobility impairments.

When pedestrians, for example families with pushchairs, are forced into the road and into oncoming traffic, pavement parking is simply dangerous.

It is also worth adding that pavement surfaces are not designed to carry the weight of vehicles, and the added maintenance cost of repairing cracked and damaged paving.
