Put a restriction on price increase for essential items
The rising cost of living is making it increasingly difficult for people to afford basic necessities. To address this, I propose the following measures regarding essential items, both food and non-food:
- Tax Exemption: All essential items should be exempt from taxation.
- Price Freeze: A price freeze should be implemented on these essential items to prevent further increases. This freeze should establish a set price for each item, ensuring fairness across all retailers.
- Cost Stabilization for Providers: Companies providing these essential items should also be protected from increases in their operational costs, ensuring they can maintain production and supply.
- Examples of Essential Items: The following list provides examples of items that should be considered essential and thus subject to the proposed measures. This list is not exhaustive and can be expanded upon:
- Fresh produce (fruits and vegetables)
- Dairy products (milk, butter, eggs, etc.)
- Infant formula
- Diapers/nappies
- Sanitary products (tampons, pads, etc.)
- Toiletries (toilet paper, soap, etc.)
This proposal aims to alleviate the financial strain on individuals and families struggling to afford essential goods. Further discussion and analysis are encouraged to refine the list of essential items and implement the proposed measures effectively.
Why is this important?
The escalating cost of living is pushing families to the brink. Food bank usage is at an all-time high, a clear indicator of widespread hardship. Without swift intervention, the long-term consequences will be devastating and difficult to reverse. For many families, the damage is already being done. They face the potential loss of their homes, jobs, and even their health. The immense financial strain threatens to tear families apart
