Refugees Welcome in the Villages near Glastonbury

Offer to home 50 refugee families

Why is this important?

Aylan, the toddler who drowned fleeing Syria, was just three years old. His town was under attack by Isis. His five year old brother and his mum also died trying to reach safety.

Yet our prime minister has been reticent about offering support and assistance to those who need it most. We know Britain is not the kind of country that turns its back as people drown in their desperation to flee places like Syria.

So let's stand up for Britain's long tradition of helping refugees fleeing war. Let's show the Prime Minister that we, the people of Mendip, are proud to do our part and provide refuge to people in their hour of need.

How it will be delivered

To be hand delivered at 11am Friday 11 September 2015 at Mendip District Council Offices.

Mendip District Council met at the end of last year to discuss the ongoing refugee crisis and they have agreed to allocate £30,000 this year to secure private tenancies for refugees who arrive in our area. Two properties will be leased immediately but they will remain empty until Mendip-bound refugees arrive in the UK. There is still no indication of when this will be.

We have had a lovely letter from Mendip District Council. Sadly we still haven't reached 50 signatures so can't be published on their website but they have linked their statement in response on their home page. They write "the Council shares concerns about the plight of refugees and is committed to responding to the crisis" and they "will work closely with local Parish Councils and other agencies to ensure any refugees who come to Mendip receive the support they need". Mendip Council are also collating offers of help with accommodation from local people so please contact the Housing Options Teams via their website or telephone 0300 303 8588 if you have a spare room/property. Thanks everyone.

We delivered our petition to Mendip Council this morning who were incredibly supportive. They repeated the feeling of Cllr Philip Ham's statement, that we must help all those we can, but they can't do anything until refugees are able to enter the country. They have asked us to keep the petition open and to continue to raise support and awareness so that they can demonstrate the views of the Mendip people to the Local Government Association and, ultimately, the Government.
Please keep sharing our petition and, if you need to convince anyone, please share the "Help is Coming" video created by Benedict Cumberbatch, amongst others, available on YouTube. The Crowded House soundtrack is also available on iTunes to raise funds for Save The Children.
Thanks very much
