Special needs children should have access to education! Stop ignoring parents/carers !

Give special needs children full access to education.

Why is this important?

Children with SEN seem to be falling through the cracks of a system that claims to support , families are suffering because of neglect from local authorities and not being heard by professionals who’s job it is to support .

I'm the mother of a 10 year old boy, who has special education needs adhd / autism. He was placed into a school for special needs after not being able to cope in a Mainstream school - Many years of ignored cries for help and chasing services with no luck we were faced with no choice but to take up independent SEN school. Unfortunately due to covid restrictions in place at the time, still 2020, things were very unorganised and I felt there was a lack of information regarding school and their policy, but felt pressure to place my son in a school so he could access education and feel accepted in a school which stated it can meet his needs and much more.

Unfortunately second year at the school was not successful and we were faced with permanent exclusion. Many staff members had changed, 3 different headmasters in space of a year and a very unorganised schedule had contributed to this as I felt there was very little education taking place.

It’s been nearly 9 months since the permanent exclusion took place with no offer of learning, no support, no direct contact from local authority. Emails are being sent to us promising education and promises of alternative provision, but to this day no access to full time education. Most the emails I have received are responses to desperate emails I've sent asking for updates or chasing services - a child is out of education for 9 months and nobody cares !? Nobody can help !?

I find this unacceptable and a form of neglect towards children with SEN. They need access to education and stop ignoring the huge amount of issues that come with being isolated. The pandemic has had a huge impact on everyone already , having to stay home once again !? The huge impact on mental health, low self esteem, no friends, no opportunities that come with accessing education environment, these are only some of the issues a child with SEN experiences.

The more I read the more I hear of parents being in the same position and worse. Are our SEN children lost in the system / ignored after unsuccessful settle in school!? So many people in charge of so many departments that are responsible for specific roles but why isn’t the right support available or offered. Failure to support child with SEN and provide alternative education provisions is having a huge impact on children and families.
