Unlimited attempts to take Literacy and Numeracy Skills Test for PGCE Teacher Training Courses
I would like DfEE to make the number of attempts to undertake the Literacy and Numeracy skills test unlimited like how it used to be before 2012 because I have applied for the teacher training courses for the past 4 years and I am unable to pass my maths test on the third attempt. I did revision all the way through but could not pass by one mark and therefore could not study the PGCE course and become a teacher. I have a First class Degree and MA. I have 5 years of experience of working in a school as a Teaching Assistant. Considering all of my skills and qualities, I cannot pass my numeracy test so I cannot become a teacher. Some people feel really nervous when it comes to doing a test under time pressure with only 3 attempts and I am one of those people. This does not mean I am bad at maths, it just means I need some more attempts to feel confident and pass the tests. This system of 3 attempts is not fair because not everyone learns the in the same way. Everyone is different and we all have different needs and abilities. Some students may pass in their first attempt but when you fail 3 attempts then you waste another 2 years waiting for the next 3 attempts.
Why is this important?
If you cannot pass the tests in your third attempt, like me, then this holds you back from becoming an outstanding teacher. 2 years is a lot of time and it holds students back from wanting to teach because if you cannot pass after 2 years then you have to wait for another 2 years. I would like unlimited chances to pass Literacy and numeracy skills test to be put back to action because the government is loosing so many highly skilled student teachers as they are unable to pass their qts tests. I am sure most PGCE students would agree with this.
