  • Ban Plastic Takeaway Containers
Plastic pollution is a major global problem which impacts our environment and ultimately our food chain. Plastic is now found at all levels of the marine ecosystem right from plankton and the fish we eat all the way up to those devastating images of whales, turtles and seabirds with stomachs clogged up with plastic. It is not enough that we sit back and do nothing and expect someone else to deal with the problem. Every individual has a responsibility to minimise their plastic waste by recycling, using reusable containers and drinks bottles, refusing single use plastic bags and also by picking up rubbish they see on beaches. However, at some point we need a stance to be taken by our local Councils and Governments to impose bans on wasteful practices. Research has shown that encouragement and education is not always enough - this needs to be enforced by legislation. Alternative technologies are out there - compostable containers are available which are up to the job. Hobart has just become the first city in Australia to recently vote to impose this ban on their takeaway businesses and it is time that the UK stepped up and led the way with this initiative. Cornwall is world renowned for its beauty and heritage together with its stunning beaches and there have been huge efforts made to improve our beach quality over the years. It is no surprise that national charity Surfers Against Sewage and the beach cleaning movement #2MinuteBeachClean both started in Cornwall. We lead the way with educating people about the dangers of ocean plastic - now let our Council step up and make a real difference to the oceans of plastic which is clogging up our environment.

  • Relatives rights to Legal Aid for Inquests.
These bodies bring in the best legal representation, often paid for by the public purse. In most cases relatives are left to fend for themselves at a time when they are still grieving for their loved ones. Relatives usually have limited means and little knowledge of legal procedures and will find the inquest intimidating and confusing. Most people will be shocked to find, as I did, that although you wish to represent your loved one you have no disclosure rights, requests to the court are often either ignored or misinterpreted. Without legal representation an expert witnesses will not take instructions to provide expert opinions and analysis to support the family’s case. Many relatives like me are struggling to understand a death which could have been avoided at the same time they are trying to come to terms with a recent bereavement. They are unaware of the types of inquest available such as the standard UK inquest or the more in depth and investigative EU Article 2 Inquest. Coroners, although supposedly independent, are often familiar with the other party’s legal representatives and in some cases have worked in the same legal practice. In some cases the coroner works with the state to secure a quick verdict leaving the relatives facing decades of work to secure the truth. We live in a society where criminals have more rights than victims or their families and I believe this injustice needs reversing. Legal Aid funding should be extended to serve bereaved families who deserve to know the truth about how their relative died. http://www.examiner.co.uk/news/grieving-widower-howard-denby-tried-13265128 http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/calls-inquiry-call-over-suicide-6926557 http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/carol-denby-killed-herself-after-6981544 http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/fathers-despair-delays-cps-review-9682318 http://www.itv.com/news/wales/2013-01-14/robbie-powell-death-report-redactions-uncovered-by-wales-this-week/ http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4393976/Asthma-girl-s-parents-call-unlawful-death-ruling.html http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4393976/Asthma-girl-s-parents-call-unlawful-death-ruling.html This is important because for the relatives they need closure and only the truth will give them this and for society in general we have seen too many cover up's and as a consequence many more innocent people have suffered when the truth has been hidden. The loss of Legal Aid has disadvantaged the majority with justice and truth only available to those who can afford to buy their version of it.

  • We want prescription tranquilliser support group in Birmingham
My husband who has been housebound for over 2 years is an involuntary benzo prescription addict in withdrawal and as research has shown would benefit from talking to others like him in this city. Other cities have this support but Birmingham hasn`t and the Cross City CCG has the power to helpbut only helps illicit drug users not prescription addicts like Phil. There are an estimated 250,000 prescription benzo addicts in England and The Cross City CCG has the 4th largest population in England so there must be many benzo prescription addicts like my husband and sharing their strategies to deal with the neuropathic symptoms will help.Phil has had no contact with anyone in this city ;he has to phone charities in Bristol, Oldham and Bradford . Birmingham is described by them as a disgrace .Help is urgently neededand the CROSS City CCG can easily identify others like Phil. This was done in Oldham in 2004.Please help to get our CCG to act.

  • Show disability sports on television all year round
We feel that there needs to be an equal opportunity for developing disabled athletes as well as other fans to watch their favourite disability sport on a more regular basis aside from the Paralympic and Invictus Games. There are endless amounts of events that do not get any media coverage, which should, to assist in doing exactly what the London 2012 games intended to do ''inspire a generation.'' Without the media coverage on a more regular basis, how can budding Paralympian's have sporting role models to look up to and aspire to be like how can these young people be expected to develop without being able to see how disabled professional athletes play their chosen sport. Not just this but there are endless possibilities to the positive effect that having disability sport on TV week on week will have, not only to inspire the next generation of young people to take up different sports but it will have a positive effect across the board of society, from the young and developing players right through to the high profile developed Paralympian's themselves. Most importantly how can a generation of Paralympian's be inspired by events that only happen every two - four years.

  • Reduce Loneliness by introducing intergenerational nursery classes
Throughout my Human Geography degree at Gloucester University I have specialised in learning about the worlds ageing population. An increase in the longevity of people’s lives alongside a declining birth rate has resulted in an ageing population. This means many practical problems have evolved. For example there is an ever increasing strain on healthcare, sheltered housing and an increase in the dependency ratio. An increase in the older generation means the dependency ratio in turn increases; the working section of a population is put under pressure to provide, mostly through taxes for the older generation. However, social stress is occurring which cannot be solved by money alone, there is an ever increasing issue of loneliness within the older generation. Loneliness is a complex and usually unpleasant emotion, which typically includes anxious feelings about a lack of connectedness or communality with others. Loneliness can get into every pore of an elderly persons life and can have detrimental effects. I believe it is a very sad reflection that when people are most in need they feel the most abandoned. However, I want us to work together as a community to create a long term and sustainable solution for loneliness in Cheltenham, this would occur by bringing nursery age children into old peoples homes on a regular basis. The two generations would complete activities together which will have benefits for both (as seen on Channel 4 program 'Old peoples home for 4 year olds')

  • Abolish gender-specific job titles
Currently, in the UK, there are hundreds of thousands of people who do not identify as male or female or do not identify as the gender they were assigned at birth. An estimated 42% of these people do not live in their preferred gender role because they feel they will lose their jobs, and 35% of these people have attempted suicide at least once due to abuse as a result of their gender. These people need to feel like they are able to be in the gender role they feel they belong to, and not live in a gender which they do not feel right in just because of fear that they will lose their job or receive abuse because of this. Currently, many jobs have gender-specific titles which can only apply to males or females, for example, 'midwife', and 'waitress' or 'waiter'. People in these jobs feel uncomfortable coming out as non-gender binary as they think they will not be welcome in these jobs anymore. Changing the names of these jobs so that they are non-gender specific will make people who are non-gender binary feel more comfortable in their situations and it will open up more opportunities for them where they feel limited due to their personal gender opinions.

  • Equal Consideration for Women in Sport in England
It's important for the future development of girls and women's sport. Ultimately for all sport in our country. It's about gender equality and opportunities. Girls need positive roles models like boys do in all aspects of life. Sports enables development of confidence, teamwork and skills. It's also fun but not if you have to fight at every step to access opportunities readily available for boys and men.
