• Keep Kendal Markets Public
Since 1974 South Lakeland District Council (S.L.D.C - now currently Lib Dem controlled) and Kendal Town Council have been responsible for the upkeep, management and promotion of Kendal's historic indoor and outdoor markets. Due mainly to a lack of proper investment, management and promotion on their behalf, they now want to "outsource" the running of the markets into the private sector. This decision has come at a time when other nearby local authorities, such as Allerdale Borough Council are bringing back former "failed privatised" markets in their area back under public sector control. A recent survey of Kendal Market Traders undertaken by SOUTH LAKES LABOUR PARTY concluded that 90% of traders were opposed to outsourcing, 85% wanted the Lib Dem controlled S.L.D.C to continue running the market and 70% said that they had not been properly consulted. One of the most successful markets in the North of England is Skipton which is solely run by SKIPTON TOWN COUNCIL. We beleive that the Lib Dem controlled S.L.D.C and Kendal Town Council should re-think the situation that they, over the years has neglected. Our markets are a valuable, local community asset and with a small amount of creative will power, they could thrive without being flogged off.

  • Don’t turn Debenhams in Folkestone into a cinema!
We already have a cinema in Folkestone! We love Folkestone, the most amazing thing about it is that we are teeming with so many local businesses that we support, and a new cinema would put our silver screen out of business! We already have a cinema, what about an arcade, or a roller skating rink? There’s isn’t anything affordable or fun in Folkestone for young people at the moment, apart from our cinema, but we already have one! We want something new, and to keep supporting our cinema that has been here for years!

  • Keep Rugby Union 6-Nations games on free-to-view TV
Over many decades, for many rugby enthusiasts, watching the 5-Nations and later the 6-Nations on TV has been the highlight of the sporting year. If it goes behind a paywall, as has been suggested, Rugby will go the same way as Test Cricket, losing dedicated fans, will failing to get youngsters interested, and will just wither away. This would be tragic. Don't let it happen.

  • Save The Horse Hospital and Contemporary Wardrobe from Eviction
Contemporary Wardrobe and The Horse Hospital are London institutions that have existed in the same location since the eighties. The former houses the biggest collection of original street clothing in the UK - 20,000 pieces ranging from WW2 till now- that can be hired, viewed by students, photographed etc and, as such, is a very important museum-especially if we consider that the UK is where many of the worlds most original style tribes originated. The Horse Hospital , located above Contemporary Wardrobe, has been an essential space where impoverished and young artists, film makers, designers, poets etc can exhibit their work for a pittance. It is a community artist's hub that has helped many a creative find their feet and survive. Both cannot be lost to build more luxury flats. We need such in inner London and its is paramount we fight for them to survive . I did one of my first art exhibitions there and could not have done it elsewhere and when working as a fashion stylist borrowed clothing on countless occasion that informed young people of their heritage.

  • SAVE OUR FRESH FISH AND MEAT COUNTERS AT ASDA
The reason why many people come into ASDA is because of the fresh meat and fish counters given the dwindling butchers and fishmongers’ shops on the high streets. If the fresh meat and fish counters were to close then they would not have the option of purchasing fresh meat and fish locally which is an important alternative to packaged and processed products. Also, the friendly staff provide social interaction that the shoppers enjoy – it is part of the shopping experience. According to the GMB union 2,832 staff jobs are at possible risk of redundancy. In my local store in Havant, this includes the 7 members of staff, some of whom have worked there for decades. Add your support now by signing this petition to let ASDA know its customers are very concerned and want senior management to hear their voice.

  • EDINBURGH NEEDS A PERMANENT MARKET/BOOT SALE PLACE
Its important as a community gathering .Often items were sold for pennies and items normally out of budget ranges were there at a reasonable price. I bough a lot of my clothes and dishes for my home there Along with curtains and other necessary items. Too many people live on hourly or short contracts and boot sales are invaluable Charity shops have almost priced some parts of our community out altogether Their prices have risen -a huge amount- Its also a great communal meeting point and if a permanent place was provided perhaps a small cafe could be set up too ,creating a job for someone??!! People just love a good market .

  • Reject the Corporate Takeover of The Edinburgh Fringe
As shameful as it is to admit, I knew about the problems at The Edinburgh Fringe long before the stand I am making now. I've been going as a participant and punter since 2011 and have had first-hand experience for the exploitation, shocking work-practices and health and safety concerns that many people are bravely being open about. You only need to read some of the articles of people who say 'Cambodia have better working conditions than the fringe' https://www.edinburghlive.co.uk/news/edinburgh-news/edinburgh-fringe-whistleblower-says-working-16020203 - or the amazing work Unite have done around holding individual venues such as C Venues to account (and even getting the University to withhold their venues). I attended the Fringe Society AGM in August 2019 with a clear question; In the Articles of Association, it lists the powers of the Fringe Society under point. 4.1.2 to ‘to educate, support, advise, and encourage those who participate in the Arts’, SUPPORT is the word I want to concentrate on here, because I feel that this has not been publicly fulfilled as dozens upon dozens of participants in the Edinburgh Fringe have publicly declared instances of low pay, being overworked, harassed, ill-treated, who knows how many are too frightened to come forward. For example the case of Shira Kaliski, who was quoted in the Sunday Mail that the conditions working in Cambodia are better than the Edinburgh Fringe; quoted as living off ‘slave wages’ ‘working 17 hour days’ sharing a room with 3 other people, no food, in the whole month, just three days off’. I have witnessed scenes working at the fringe myself, and implored to speak out. Why hasn’t the Fringe Society supported these people under this point, why has there been no public show of empathy, I understand that society directors are asked about things beyond their control, but this issue is under the articles of association, you may say this isn’t from someone who has directly contacted you, but I am happy to sit with Shona McCarthy and any board members, the board chair to tell you and show you evidence of exploitation, negligence and actions which I am reliable informed of as illegal, I’ve endured and so have others. The great things about the Fringe Society is that we can meet here today in a supportive space, where chief executives and participants respecting each other as equals, that will listen to one another and work supportively towards positive outcomes, that is something to be applauded and championed, so please can you respond to the point; are you aware of the conditions participants are made to work in, confirm that they are illegal and do you offer empathy? I have indeed met with Shona McCarthy and have had a very good conversation about how to work towards a positive solution. The Fringe Societies powers are limited, which may be part of the problem. This petition is to show that many Edinburgh Fringe Creatives and Workers need to know that the only public face of The Edinburgh Fringe actually understands the importance of the issue, can show empathy and work towards meaningful action with the organisations who are responsible.
