• Save London's City Skyline Campaign
The proposed skyscraper at 22 Bishopsgate is on plot earmarked for the tallest building in the City of London. This site should therefore be reserved for a building of architectural merit and be world enviable. Instead in Karen Cook of PLP Architecture, (the senior architect of the scheme) own admission to the Architects Journal "we didn't want to appear extravagant in terms of cost and design" "I wanted to do something dignified and simple, allowing the other more articulated one-off pieces (such as the Cheesegrater and the Gerkin) to remain special." This scheme will destroy the city views to millions of Londoners and affect London's appeal around the world. This particular site will be of special architectural interest to the public and the proposed scheme does not meet their expectation. The prior superior scheme gained planning permission and is a building worthy in London's skyline. The previous proposal can be found here: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=375557 Please sign if you wish the proposal be rejected at planning or called in for public inquiry.

  • Reinstate ‘Purdah’ period on the EU referendum
The elections watchdog said it was ‘disappointed and concerned’ by the decision to scrap long-standing rules used in previous referendums to stop public funds going on political campaigning. The EU Referendum Bill, which will come before MPs tomorrow, also removes the 28-day ‘purdah’ period seen in last year’s vote on Scottish independence and the 2011 referendum on the voting system.

  • Improve Wigan Cycle Network
A fatality happened on Robin Park Road in May. http://www.itv.com/news/granada/update/2015-05-15/cyclist-killed-near-wigan-polcie-station/ A tragedy like this is a clear indicator that the Wigan cycle network is unfit for use. Its high time that something has to be done to make cycling safer in the borough and to prevent any further incidents happening in the future. FIFA is a world wide paragon of fair play and inclusion. We feel that this has been tainted by the current corruption arrests. We'd like to see FIFA reformed and overhauled.

  • Stop Big Business turning Valued Pubs into local shops
Nice Old Pubs were built where people meet and socialise. This happens to a much lesser extent in shops. Once a Pub is gone another is unlikely to be built in the local area, so destroying the community spirit.

  • Introduce mandatory media sourcing
In an age of fear inducing, xenophobic, biased media, retractions, edits and apologies have become far too commonplace in many media outlets. Many newspapers have become a voice of fear and oppression, making claims, particularly about benefits claimants and immigrants, which is spreading fear, discontent and creating hostilities, only for these 'stories' to be found out as lies, or 'bent truths', with retractions and apologies published in tiny, tiny squares in the corner of pages, unseen by most, and by that time, the damage is already done. So this petition would suggest that, like students in universities are forced to, that all media outlets must provide valid, reliable and accessible sources for all of their information. This would mean: *Where they got the information, i.e. a person (and how they verified this person, with links to another verifiable source, unless it presents an obvious risk to the person involved, and that risk can be 100% proved), which website they used (for statistics), links to studies used, etc. *How they verified and cross referenced all information before processing it into an article. *Having accessible links to all sources used, where reasonably practicable. This petition would also like to suggest that when/if an error is made by publishers, the retraction/apology is printed on the front page of their publication. The public gain all news knowledge from the media, and when an article is posted which stirs emotions such as anger, fear, hatred, etc and could be seen to promote xenophobia, racism, etc, it is important that the publishers take responsibility for that and inform the public of the truth. This idea could be the foundation for legislation to keep the media unbiased, truthful, informative and in the public interest. For too long, people have been hurt, shamed, stereotyped and damaged by slanderous and false media reporting, as well as discontent introduced by certain publications who insist on inflammatory headlines stating that we as Britons are being 'stolen' from by immigrants, while running adverts for anti-poverty charities on the same pages. The media needs regulation for public interest, and a public forum should be opened for everyone to express their views, so genuine, positive legislation can be formed to protect the public from being fed falsities and tearing our multi-cultural society apart because of misinformation and fear. Thank you for your time.

  • Get international cricket back on terrestial televison
Sky sports are ruining the beautiful game for the sake of money. Empty grounds, dwindling support and being limited to short highlights on terrestrial television is slowly undermining a great British tradition. We urge Helen Grant to step in and see to it that all sports of "National interests" be given to the masses and not just those who can afford to pay Sky Sports extortionate monthly charges.

  • Balance "poverty porn" with "one law for the rich" porn
Farming subsidies paid to millionaires, VAT breaks for companies bidding for lucrative NHS contracts, the recent tax rules changes that mean companies don't have to pay the balance of their corporation tax to the UK tax authorities, are benefits too. They amount to tens of millions, if not billions, of pounds. They still come out of general taxation, and are paid for by the less well off who proportionally pay far more tax. So there needs to be far more balance. All of this is not good for public debate as it is never put into a forum where voters can see it. There are approximately 10 times more people employed chasing benefits fraud that there are chasing tax evasion, yet the amounts of money concerned are 10 times the other way. If we are concerned about "freeloaders" and "scroungers" who operate with a sense of entitlement ignoring the morals of what they do then ALL of them need to be taken to task, instead of a small cross section of vulnerable people who are being exploited by "poverty porn".

  • Legalise Marijuana
This is important because as adults, we should have certain controls over our lives. It seems completely ridiculous that drugs such as alcohol and tobacco are not only legal but sold as a commercial product, yet marijuana is treated as an obscene drugs. It can be argued that marijuana can lead to mental illness but not only has this not been supported by research, but this seems like a hypocritical argument considering that alcohol can lead to numerous illnesses and is one of the leading causes of death in the UK. Not only that, between the years 2011-12, the Office for National Statistics found that alcohol accounted for 63% of violent crimes in Scotland, and 40% of all violent crime throughout England and Wales. Similarly, the risks associated with tobacco such as lung cancer are commonly known, yet both it and alcohol can be legally purchased by anyone over the age of 18 in the UK. We live in a culture where binge drinking seems socially acceptable but smoking marijuana can result in a criminal record. The UK is being left behind by countries who are realising that the war on drugs has failed. Trying to use scare tactics such as prison sentences for the mere possession of a naturally growing substance is ludicrous. Perhaps later down the line, other drugs will become decriminalized but I think it is high time that marijuana is not only decriminalized, but fully legalised. We only need to look to Portugal to realise the effect that decriminalisation and legalisation have on drug use and society overall. A war on marijuana use is not only a war on drugs, it's a war on our basic human rights and our freedoms as human beings. While it is possible (and in fact occurs more often than it should) to die from consuming too much alcohol, the possibility of overdosing on marijuana are inconceivably small. When do we ever hear news updates of somebody dying from a cannabis overdose? Never. For those of you worried about the societal impact of the legalisation of this substance, one only need to look to Colorado to see that legalisation has a vast array of benefits. While this was a fairly recent move and it is still early days, things definitely look positive in areas such as crime rate.

  • We are petitioning for free childcare for all from the age of two years
We believe in free childcare as a step toward a poverty-free Britain. The government must do all they can to get adults living in deprivation back into education and into work. Free childcare is therefore a MUST. Currently free childcare is available for all regardless of income for children over the age of three. As a teacher in the further education sector (not university based) I have had women either not show up to classes due to lack of childcare, quit a course or not show up all together for the same reason. Often, these women have been in need of support in the array of ways only a classroom can provide. As I am a lecturer in teaching English to speakers of other languages, I specialise in catering for the needs of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants. Often facing social isolation, the classroom is not only a place for learning but a place to feel like a human being again. It isn't fair that I have had to turn women away from classes because they need to come in with their young, screaming children. Other further education teachers will know what I am talking about! I have done what I can in the past, but it is the other students in the class that often have to put their foot down and say they can't concentrate when there are children in the room. It affects the material of discussion and in the past I have even had to provide under 5's with things to do to keep them occupied. The mothers often have to leave the room, dragging their children to the bathroom, disrupting class discussions or the kids play on their mum's mobile - music blaring, guns firing. Us adult ed. teachers do our best but we shouldn't have to play nursery nurse too. There is a proven link between poverty and inaccessible childcare especially for single parents. A child raised in a single parent household is twice as likely to live in deprivation as a child raised by a couple. Current early years provision is just too expensive for those on lower wages. Furthermore, lack of funding for established nurseries means that there are extremely limited places available, often on a first come, first serve basis. So if a parent doesn't get their child into the creche on time, the parent doesn't get to attend class. For equality between rich and poor, parents and non parents, single parents and coupled parents, free childcare for all, regardless of income, must be made available. Without it, these groups of people are not getting equal rights to education and employment. Educate to Liberate is calling on the government to make it pay to work. We ask them to make it pay for people to go back to study. Anyone would think they wanted to keep people in the poverty cycle not help them out....
